This is a cool tag a blogger friend of mine, Faith, posted a while back. Reading hers was a delight. She has a fascinating WIP. You should definitely check out her blog. One of the things I enjoy about her blog is that she sets her own trends 🙂
Some of these questions and answers might seem redundant to people who have followed me regularly from the beginning, but I have so many new followers now, I hope that some of my new friends are able to get a glimpse of the characters in my story.
Basic rules: Give credit to the blogger friend who tagged you. Answer the questions. Tag someone else 🙂
Give us the rundown of some of your main characters.
There are two main characters, as it is a romance, titled Second Chances.
Lacey – twenty year old college student who works part time, goes to school full time, and lives with her brother. Also, she carries a lot of family baggage…
Jay – twenty-three year old ex-convict who is also attending college. He gave his life to Christ in prison. He currently lives with a roommate from the church college group.
Who’s your favorite and why?
Jay’s character was the catalyst for my story idea. I had mapped out his background long before I did Lacey’s. It’s hard to pick which one would be my favorite because Lacey exhibits many of my own qualities, but Jay was more fun to write and to craft.
Who’s the most difficult to write and why?
It’s funny, because even though I say Lacey has many of my qualities, she was the most difficult to write and to develop, maybe because I didn’t want her to be flat and boring. I don’t really see myself as exciting. I also didn’t want her to be the ‘perfect’ version of me. Such a cliche thing to do. So balancing those features of her character out has been difficult.
If you could choose one to spend the day with in real life, who would you choose and why?
Again – this is hard. I feel like I know Lacey so well, I feel like we would be great friends, because of her personality. But meeting a life-version of Jay would be amazing too.
Pick at least one and answer.
What’s their basic description? Physical appearance, job, etc.
What are their views on love?
What are their religious views
Jay made a slew of stupid mistakes that landed him in Jail. Completely hopeless and furious with himself, he found forgiveness through Christ. He strongly credits the life he has now to his relationship with God, and his relationship with Matt. Without either one, he would be back in the same neighborhood under the same deplorable circumstances with a complete lack of opportunity and no real hope for his life. Now, he has a hope for a better future.
Lacey was raised in church. When her parents split, she begged her mother to forgive her father. Being 11, she was unaware of the actual circumstances other than infidelity. Her mother’s lack of forgiveness eroded Lacey’s faith. Her sister’s death later on destroyed her faith in God completely. She doesn’t deny he exists, buts he’s just so angry at him. Now, she shies away completely from anything that has to do with God and religion.
How do they feel about death?
What’s their approach to food and cooking?
Jay can’t cook to save his life. Lacey, well, she can cook, but she rarely does it.
What’s their place in the world?
What’s their big dream?
How did they come about?
Over ten years ago, I read a little YA romance novel about some boy who fell in love with a girl, whose sister died when the boy’s mother ran a stop sign. Cute story. I loved that Romeo – Juliet idea, where two people fall in love despite the fact that their families hate each other. Now in this story, there are similarities in that respect, but also some major differences. I think I’ll keep it at that, or run the risk of revealing the whole premise.
If you were to ship them with another character, yours or someone else’s, who and why?
Well, being as this is a romance, the two are definitely shooting for a dating relationship.
If you can, share some lines or a snippet focused on this character!
Jay grinned when Lacey emerged from the hallway. A gentle shade of rose tinged her cheeks and lips. Her hair cascaded over her shoulders in damp, dark auburn tresses.
Is it possible that she’s even more stunning tonight, than she was the other day? He secretly appreciated that she hadn’t changed her outfit. Jeans and a purple sweater suited her, he thought.
Seated on one of the over-stuffed sofas in Joel’s living room, he mustered every bit of self-control he had to turn his head back to whoever had been talking to him beforehand.
“Welcome back,” Jenna scooted closer toward Jay, making room for Lacey to sit down.
Lacey smiled at Jenna’s greeting. She eased into the conversation going on around them. As hard as he tried, any words he thought of evaporated any time he attempted to speak. She seemed to zap all his brain activity.
“Jay,” Someone was trying to get his attention. “Jay, earth to Jay,”
He turned toward Matt. “What?”
Bonus note: This situation actually happened to me while dating. My boyfriend sat on the couch just staring at me for the longest time until someone else called his name. I thought it was hilarious.
Tagging: Anyone who feels like divulging secrets and snippets of their characters is welcome to do this tag. If you do, come back and leave a link for me so I can read yours too.
Happy writing 🙂
