A time to Speak: (Out of time series book 2)

By Nadine Brandes

Genre:  Young Adult Christian sci fi / speculative fiction

SPOILER ALERT. Particularly, if you have NOT read the first book. It’s amazing. Go read A Time to Die and then come back!

Synopsis:

Parvin Blackwater wanted to die, but now she’s being called to be a leader. The only problem is, no one wants to follow.

The Council uses Jude’s Clock-matching invention to force “new-and-improved” Clocks on the public. Those who can’t afford one are packed into boxcars like cattle and used for the Council’s purposes.

Parvin and Hawke find themselves on a cargo ship of Radicals headed out to sea. What will the Council do to them? And why are people suddenly dying before their Clocks have zeroed-out?

Things I love about this book:

It was better than the first. which is a grand achievement, as there tends to be a lull in many YA distopian or any YA series. The story is full of life-threatening circumstances, heart-wrenching decision making and an amazing man who would do anything to stay with the girl he loves. (swoon)

In this second installment, Parvin was so much more likable. I loved the first book, but she was so whiny in the first book. I’m so happy to see her progress significantly.

I thoroughly enjoyed learning much more of who Solomon was, and watching his character grow. I’m a sucker for romance, so this romantic arc between the two definitely drew me in deeper to the book.

Brandes has mastered the art of revealing the world you find yourself immersed in by showing you, instead of telling you. As a reader you learn new things as they come. You experience discovery at the same time as the characters. Great fun!

I loved the message: God can use you, even if you are week, maimed, whiny, timid, scared to death…Even if the world hates you. (or you just think the world hates you) God can use anyone for his glory. God can use your mistakes, God can use your weaknesses and make something amazing happen.

A great installment to the series with an ending I half-loved, half-hated (hate in that, I can’t believe that happened, I didn’t want that to happen! Did it really just happen??)

I highly recommend this series overall! You should definitely go check it out.
