Overcomer: Mandisa

On Mondays, I highlight a song from my book playlists.

When I began working on my second manuscript, which would be Book 2 of this Second Chance series I’m writing, as soon as I heard this song, it resonated with my story, and has stuck with me through the entire writing/editing process.

Overcomer by Mandisa

This song speaks of encouragement, of staying strong, and reminds us that we don’t have to fight things alone. We have a God who is bigger than our circumstances, and there are often support systems in terms of friends, family, etc that can fight with us – if we let them. This song reminds us that we’re not the only people who’ve ever fallen or failed. Overcoming obstacles isn’t an instantaneous process. But when we change our mindset to think positively, to remember that God is with us, I think that makes a world of difference.

What does it have to do with my story?

It has everything to do with my story. If Serena had a song all to herself, this would be the one. Her journey throughout the story is definitely one of overcoming – overcoming fear, overcoming self-doubt and overcoming abuse. She’s not one to give up easily.

Her journey also involves finding the meaning of love. Not our human definition of love, but God’s definition of love.

I loved this song the first time I heard it.

Did I mention that I saw Mandisa in concert recently at the end of February? So AWESOME. I should have waited in line to meet her at the end of the night but it was 11PM and I didn’t feel like waiting another 30 to 45 min.

Ah well…I DID however get to meet Audio Adrenaline.

And in so meeting Audio Adrenaline, I met one of the former singers of DC talk. “does a happy dance.”

    1. I wanted to meet Mandisa but she was not at the merch table at the end of the night. Love her too! She’s from my hometown so it was fun listening to her sing in her hometown and reminiscing to the crowd about being back 🙂
