Aboard Providence: (#4 in the Uncharted series)
Jonah Ashton is determined to finish medical school before rumors of Southern rebellion erupt into all-out war. Despite accusations of wrongdoing that threaten his career, when he learns his father plans to join a group of families who are sailing away from America to form a new settlement, he travels to Virginia to say goodbye. However, an accident forces Jonah to accompany them to serve as the ship’s physician. He boards the Providence with the plan to escort his family to their new settlement in South America and then return to Pennsylvania to clear his name. What he doesn’t count on is getting lost at sea… and Marian Foster. When Jonah makes a startling discovery it changes everything, but will it change his heart?
I thoroughly enjoyed the world in this book. The mixture of historical romance with just that hint of sci fi elements…fascinating! I find it interesting that this is the 4th in the Uncharted series. It’s obviously a prequel and it definitely explains a significant amount of information and answers questions I had after reading the first book in the series.
I’ve noticed lately that I have a tendency to read the first, then skip to the 4th in a series. Probably I should stop doing that 🙂 Usually that bothers me (even though it’s my own fault), but in this case, it may be an advantage – plus, this story was well done!
I enjoyed both characters, and their contrasting personalities. Mariam’s optimistic and positive attitude drew me in, and I wanted so badly to see if she could get through to Jonah’s negative demeanor. Though to be fair, he was extremely stressed and carried a huge burden of pressure.
I enjoyed the gradual progression of their relationship. It’s one of those relationships that is obvious to everyone else around them, except for the two directly involved.
A great addition to the series. I look forward to reading the rest of the series books sometime soon!
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review. I was not required to give a positive reivew. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
