Synopsis:

My Thoughts

I love that last line of the synopsis: Such a beautiful, fitting and very timely message put forth throughout the novel.

While this is a beautiful story in and of itself, there were definitely some references to past books that I wish I understood more clearly, particularly when it came to Elizabeth and Louis’ past relationship and how they came to be married.

Other than the recommendation of reading the others in this series beforehand, this story was beautifully written, and eerily timely.

While in the midst of reading a portion of the text where Charles Town is on lock down and half-vacant of residents because of the direct threat of violence against their shoreline, Northern Italy, and then all of Italy, 12 hours later, went on full lock down in hopes of stopping the spread of COVD-19. The parallels between the descriptions of a deserted Charles Town, of the fears that Elizabeth harbored, were eerily similar to those heavy on the minds and hearts of people in Italy, in Wuhan, and other parts of the world today.

There were so many similarities throughout the novel the paralleled today – the shortage of supplies, the fear, people vacating the vulnerable towns on the coast, the solidarity and unity of a people coming together under immense stress. It was both very strange and comforting to read and digest. This story and this series, are of course based on historical events in my country. That we, as a people, have been through these kinds of scenarios before – the Civil War, the Spanish Influenza of 1918, through WW I, WW II, even 9/11/01 to an extent – brought me comfort. To be reminded that we as a nation, as a body of people have gotten through similar experiences; to experience with Elizabeth, the fears and the struggles of such events, and to continually be reminded to draw God close, to rely on Him when all else fails; it was all so incredibly timely, I’d venture to say it was a God thing. And it’s not the first time this has happened when reading for me.

Typically, I don’t enjoy slow-paced books, but this one I had to read slowly, while my mind wrapped around the parallels of 2020 to 1776, Fabulous writing brought forth a blend of history and romance with images of daily life and always a sense of looming suspense and mystery. An absolute fabulous read. I highly recommend you pick up the series today.

Marguerite Martin Gray enjoys history especially when combined with fiction. An avid traveler and reader, she teaches Spanish and French and has degrees in Spanish, French, and Journalism from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. She received her MA in English from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. Presently, she lives in north Louisiana with her husband and rescue cats.

I have always loved history, probably because my father took me to every historical site he could find on our travels. As I listened to him tell the story of our ancestors to a group of tourists at our Antebellum home, I suddenly realized that he was weaving tales about my own blood line. Very soon after that I flew to Charleston, South Carolina and began my research. From that first of many trips, my Revolutionary Faith Series arrived.

Draw Me to Your Side is Book Four of the series. The titles play a very significant role in the series, each having a dual meaning. The human element is obvious. Although the series is more historical than romance, the titles offer a glimpse into a potential romance. The other element is spiritual. God is the one who weaves his love and hope into their lives.
