my thoughts

Normally; I avoid posting reviews-leaning-toward negative on my blog. If this were a book I’d purchased and reviewed myself, I’d probably have not posted this review. As I received an ARC in exchange for a review, I’m obligated to post.

I wish I’d known this was a 4th book in the series. I am positive I missed a whole bunch of very relevant information that would’ve helped fill in many gaps. This story seemed to be the culminating closure in the series, with some suspense thrown in.

The suspense was paced fairly well, interspersed with the romantic happy-ever-after feelings you get while reading any story about a wedding. The beginning was epic, a great suspenseful, action-filled opening. However, after that, some of the timing of events did not quite pan out for me. I’m actually a stickler for books following a sequence of time that makes  sense and I strive to create believable timelines in all my books. If it’s clearly been only one day through the sequence of events, and later you say it’s been two days, that doesn’t jive with me.

There are a few things that didn’t quite make sense to me when it came to who Jo Oliver was, and how she reacted to situations that arose. I am positive reading the previous book especially, would have helped me understand Jo’s character much better so I will refrain from negative comments and simply state that you should absolutely read the previous books in the series. If not the first 2, definitely the third.

I enjoyed the plot line, the confusion and strange events that surrounded the beautiful island wedding and vacation. The way she wove in threads of faith from various religion, without preaching intrigued me. You don’t often see that in Christian Fiction books. The beginning began well, but the religious aspect, in my opinion, seemed to fade as the story unfolded further.

Do I recommend this book? I recommend this book if you’ve read the others in the series.

More from Catherine

In writing my Jo Oliver Thriller series, I find myself driven by passion. The genesis of the series—Cleansed By Death—was fueled by a passion to create a story about strong women embedded in a male-dominated profession, facing difficulties they could only solve through faith and community. I was vacuuming when I was hit by the idea of pitting two strong women against each other and seeing which one would win, the theme of book 2, Shattered by Death. Information gleaned during an FBI writers workshop on techniques for tracking criminals, superimposed over the mitten map of Wisconsin formed the bones for Anchored By Death, the third book in the series.

My latest novel, Capsized By Death, contains all of my favorite elements. The astute series reader will note that the foundation for the killer’s appearance in this book was introduced years ago in Cleansed By Death. But he first appeared to me during one of my many solo writing vacations on an island.

At the end of a fairytale day spent kayaking, snorkeling and listening to the sound of whales singing under water in Maui, the gorgeous male host of my day trip stood silhouetted in the setting sun. This man was beautiful in every way, and had the sort of personality that describes the essence of attractive—he pulled you into his beautiful ocean world. At that moment, I knew I had found my perfect killer for my next book! It became my goal to create a killer who was beautiful on the outside and evil on the inside. I used the New Testament book of Jude as my guide for the internal workings of my killer and thus the skeletal framework for Jude, my killer in Capsized By Death—book 4 of the Jo Oliver Thriller series—was born.
